Biology Study Program Student's Journey in Achieving Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA)

The independent campus is part of the Ministry of Education and Culture's Merdeka Belajar policy, which brings universities closer to business and industry. One of the programs of Kampus Merdeka is the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA). IISMA is an international student exchange program for 1 semester.

In 2023, the Biology study program of Yogyakarta State University succeeded in sending one of its students to the University of Szeged, Hungary. Mediana Ramadhani, a 2021 Biology undergraduate student, has completed the IISMA program in the city of Szeged, Hungary which took place from September to December 2023. Mediana left with 38 other IISMA awardees from various universities throughout Indonesia on September 4, 2023.

During the IISMA program, Mediana took 4 courses in Agricultural Engineering, namely Agrometeorology, Agricultural Biotechnology, Farm Business Management, and Agricultural Economics. In addition to Agricultural Engineering, the University of Szeged has majors in Health Science, Cultural Studies, Pharmacy, Food Engineering, Law and Political Sciences, Business and Administration, and Education. IISMA Awardees are enrolled in international classes in each department so that lectures are conducted in English. Awardees can experience education in Szeged which is different from Indonesia. One of the differences is the interactive class where students are required to be active in class. Awardees also get new relationships from various countries so that they add perspectives to the fields studied.

In addition to attending lectures, IISMA awardees were tasked with organizing events to introduce Indonesian culture to local and international students in conjunction with National Batik Day and Heroes Day. On Batik Day, IISMA Szeged awardees decided to introduce Indonesian food and traditional clothing. Awardees prepared various Indonesian foods, such as chicken rendang, sweet martabak, soto, etc. Traditional clothing was also provided for visitors to try on and a presentation on Indonesian traditional clothing was held to explain more about the clothing and the philosophy behind it.

On Heroes' Day awardees performed a theater about Ki Hajar Dewantara and an interactive poco-poco dance performance that invited visitors to join in. There were also booth games, snacks, drinks, and souvenirs from Indonesia.

By the objectives of the IISMA program, awardees experienced the local culture through events, such as festivals held in downtown Szeged, culinary specialties, such as lángos, gulyás, and kürtőskalács, as well as visiting museums and other historical buildings. At the end of the IISMA program, awardees gain a lot of experience, skills, and new relationships that are expected to help awardees in their studies and the next stage.
