Biology Education Department of UNY Conducts Animal Classification Training Using Bioresin Media to Support National Science Olympiad Preparation at a Private Islamic Elementary School in Sleman

SLEMAN – The Department of Biology Education, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), conducted a Community Service Program (PkM-DLK) 2026 on Saturday, 6 June 2026, at MI Daarul 'Ulum Sinar Melati, Sleman Regency. The program, entitled "Teaching Animal Classification through Bioresin Media to Strengthen National Science Olympiad (OSN) Competencies in Private Islamic Elementary Schools in Sleman Regency," was designed to enhance teachers' competencies in delivering innovative science instruction while strengthening their mastery of National Science Olympiad (OSN) content.
The program began with an enrichment session led by Dra. Ratnawati, M.Sc. During this session, participants gained a deeper understanding of the principles of animal classification, the use of bioresin specimens as engaging and context-based instructional media, and teaching strategies that can effectively support students' mastery of OSN materials at the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (Islamic elementary school) level. The interactive discussion also provided participants with an opportunity to exchange experiences and best practices in implementing animal classification lessons in their respective schools.
Following the theoretical session, participants took part in a hands-on workshop on the preparation and application of bioresin as an instructional medium for teaching animal classification. The practical activities covered specimen preparation, bioresin production techniques, and the effective use of bioresin specimens as classroom learning media. Through this experience, participants were expected to develop innovative teaching resources capable of increasing students' interest in science while enhancing their understanding of animal classification concepts.
The program was facilitated by a team of lecturers consisting of Dr. Suyitno Aloysius, Budiwati, M.Si., Lili Sugiyarto, M.Si., and Anisa Latifah, M.Si., with assistance from Biology students Melisa Sekarlina Putri Dayani, Priskila Gracia, Annisa Cahya Wahyu Pratama, Nabila Fauziah Hana, and Zakiya Azzahra. Throughout the workshop, lecturers and student assistants provided intensive guidance, ensuring that all participants were able to complete the practical activities successfully and gain a comprehensive understanding of the techniques presented.
The Community Service Program received enthusiastic participation from the teachers. Through this initiative, it is expected that teachers at private Islamic elementary schools in Sleman Regency will be able to integrate bioresin media into their classroom instruction, making the teaching of animal classification more engaging, interactive, and effective. Furthermore, the adoption of innovative instructional media is expected to strengthen students' preparation for the National Science Olympiad (OSN), thereby improving the quality of science education and enhancing student achievement at the elementary school level.
