COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE BIOLOGY EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AND KUPUNESIA BRINGS EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING INTO THE CLASSROOM

The Praktisi Mengajar (Teaching Practitioner) program was conducted in the Entomology A class of the 2024 cohort, with 18 students participating. This activity was carried out with full support from the course lecturer, Dr. Yunita Fera Rahmawati, S.Pd., M.Sc., who is committed to providing experiential learning in the field of entomology. In its implementation, the class collaborated with Kupunesia, an educational and butterfly conservation platform. Two expert speakers, Yohanes Agus Soenarko and Abdul Mutholib Shahroni, delivered engaging, practical, and up-to-date material. This activity is expected to broaden students’ understanding of insect biodiversity, particularly butterflies, and their roles in ecosystems. The learning materials covered the importance of butterflies as pollinators, indicators of environmental quality, and their contributions to ecosystem sustainability and food chain balance.
In addition, students were introduced to modern approaches in butterfly identification and data collection through the Kupunesia application, which is based on citizen science. The use of this technology provided hands-on experience in how field data are processed into valuable information for conservation purposes. Students also explored educational content on butterfly morphology, ecology, phenology, and their ecological roles, based on official materials from Nektar Indonesia and Kupunesia. Through this program, students are expected to develop analytical skills, ecological awareness, and make meaningful contributions to insect conservation in Indonesia.
