IMPLEMENTATION OF THE TRI DHARMA OF HIGHER EDUCATION: COMMUNITY SERVICE BY BIOLOGY LECTURERS IN PERTH

Perth, Australia. Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) once again demonstrates its commitment to the global mission of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education through a community service program titled “Introducing Orchids and Indonesian Culture through Batik Activities.” This program was conducted in Perth, Australia, in collaboration with diaspora communities: The Do Gooders and Friends Inc. and Pecinta Anggrek Indonesia DIY. Led by Dr. Evy Yulianti, M.Sc., along with a team of academic staff, Dr. Ixora Sartika Mercuriani, M.Si and Lili Sugiyarto, M.Si, this activity combined botanical education and traditional art into an interactive experience. Participants were introduced to the diversity of Indonesian orchids, including the Moon Orchid (Phalaenopsis amabilis), as well as the philosophy of batik as a world cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO.

During the training session, participants were guided to create handkerchief batik with orchid flower motifs. This activity not only developed batik-making skills but also integrated an understanding of flower morphology into visual design. The participants’ works demonstrated high creativity and deep biological understanding, making batik an interdisciplinary learning medium based on STEAM. This program aims to strengthen international social relations, empower the Indonesian diaspora, and support cultural diplomacy through art. In addition, the activity contributes to the Key Performance Indicators (IKU) of higher education, particularly IKU 2 and IKU 5, by involving students in cross-country learning experiences and applying lecturers’ work for community benefit. Evaluation results show that 85% of participants were able to master batik techniques well, and 80% of the orchid community members were able to explain flower structures both verbally and visually. The activity was considered effective in introducing Indonesian culture in an educational and inspiring way.

This initiative serves as clear evidence that art and science can synergize to strengthen cultural identity and build bridges between nations. UNY remains committed to bringing local values to the global stage through innovation in education and community service.
