BIOLOGY STUDY PROGRAM INVITES GUEST LECTURER IN APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY COURSE

The Biology Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), invited a guest lecturer for a session in the Applied Microbiology course. The lecture was held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. This activity is part of a strategy to strengthen practice-based learning and foster collaboration with other universities. The invited guest lecturer was Dr. Dra. Ir. Winastuti Dwi Atmanto, M.P., IPU, a lecturer from the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada. In her lecture, Dr. Winastuti delivered a topic entitled “Applied Microbiology in Greening Various Landscapes.”

The guest lecture was conducted interactively, featuring a discussion session that allowed students to directly ask questions about the challenges and opportunities in utilizing microorganisms for greening efforts. The use of microorganisms in greening various landscapes—such as forests, agricultural land, dry land, degraded land, and urban areas—represents a biotechnology-based approach that is increasingly popular for improving soil quality, enhancing plant growth, and accelerating environmental rehabilitation processes. Microorganisms play a significant role in improving soil fertility, supporting bioremediation, and forming symbiotic relationships with plants. This highlights that microbiology is not limited to laboratory settings but has broad applications in industry and environmental management. This activity is part of a regular program to invite practitioners and academics from outside the UNY Biology Study Program, aiming to enrich students’ understanding of the real-world applications of biological sciences.
